History:
The Rolex Day-Date was released in 1956 having been patented the previous year. The Day-Date was a first, offering a self winding, waterproof watch that could indicate both the day and date of the month.
The Day-Date is also known as the President or Presidential owing to its connection with world leaders including President Johnson and Kennedy. The Day-Date is also frequently linked with President Eisenhower, although he never actually owned one. Rolex did however offer him the companys 150,000 creation, a 18k Gold Rolex Datejust. Of interest, the original bracelet designed for the Day-Date was also named the President.
The model was launched with references 6510 and 6511 both powered by the calibre 1055 movement. These were quickly replaced after a year by references 6611, 6612 and 6613 powered by the improved 1055 calibre. With its new balance wheel the upgraded movement enabled the new reference to obtain Certification from the Swiss Office of Chronometer Control (C.O.S.C). This certification was recognised with the addition of Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified on the dial.
In 1972 Rolex added a hack feature to the Day Date allowing the second hand to be stopped if you wanted to set the time to an accurate source. Later that decade in 1978 a further improvement was made with the introduction of the quick set date function as well as a sapphire crystal making the Day Date both more practical and more robust.
The Day-Date has been offered in a number of varieties over the years including yellow gold, pink gold, white gold and platinum. Some models are adjourned with diamonds whilst others take on a more reserved appearance.
